Traditional Vs. Minks: About

Traditional Versus Minks

Minks are not a new breed of Ragdoll, they are the same amazing breed just wrapped in a different paint job!

Mink, Sepia and Solid Ragdolls are not a new or different breed, nor are they a new pattern of Ragdoll, they are a bloodline that can be traced all the way back to the first Ragdoll cats bred by Ann Baker.

Some breeders choose not to work with Minks, and only wish to work with the traditional colors. But we fell in love with them, and they ARE a true ragdoll as they are recognized by TICA, the International Cat Registery!

So why is this bloodline of ragdoll called Mink? The reason they are called Mink is because of the fur of this type of Ragdoll. It is smoother than that of the pointed Traditional Ragdoll. It may not seem possible, but they feel like a ladies mink or a cashmere rabbit.

Mink, Sepia, Colored and Traditional Ragdolls are all Purebred Ragdolls that have registration papers and pedigrees, there is a few differences between all of them. Mink, Sepia and Solid Ragdoll kittens are born with color and visible patterns, while the Traditional Ragdoll kittens are born solid white! This makes it easier to tell them all apart at birth.

The Mink color is much richer than the Traditional Ragdoll colors. It is a very deep color, and the Sepia color is even darker compared to the Mink as the Sepia carries a double copy of the Mink gene.

When you breed two Mink Ragdolls cats together you will get the following results:

  • Half of the litter will be mink colored

  • A quarter will be “Sepia” colored

  • A quarter will be pointed Traditional

Mink Ragdolls can come in all of the traditional colors of seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, flame, cream, tortie and blue/cream.

When it comes to eye color, that is the distinguishable feature between them. In the Traditional Ragdoll, the eye color will ALWAYS be blue. The Mink Ragdoll has blue or aqua eye coloring. The Solid Ragdoll has green, copper, blue, blue green or even odd colored eyes.

Solid Ragdolls can come in black, blue, chocolate, lilac, white, red, cream, blue/cream and calico/tortie. Solid Ragdolls have the same patterns as the Traditional Ragdolls. These are colorpoint(no white), mitted (white mitts on front paws and boots on back legs with white chin and bib), and bicolor (an inverted V on its face, white on all legs, chin and bib). Any of these patterns and colors can also be marked with the lynx, smoke, shaded or silver.
